The United States struck five Iranian oil tankers. Iran answered at a U.S. base in Jordan. That is the overnight file. Five hulls on the water. A base under fire. The Extra does not add a sixth ship, a body count, or a victory.

U.S. Central Command said its forces destroyed five crude carriers on Tuesday, 8 September. Four in the Gulf of Oman: M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, M/T Riesco. One near Kharg Island: M/T Derya. CENTCOM named those ships. This Extra prints the names as CENTCOM named them. It does not inventory the cargo.

CENTCOM’s reason: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had targeted a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice in two days. The command said the warship evaded both attempts and that no American personnel were harmed. That is a U.S. statement. It is logged as such. Independent confirmation of the two missed shots is not on this desk.

CENTCOM said American forces told the tanker crews to abandon ship before the strikes, and that the vessels were then rendered inoperable. Al Jazeera, CNA and ABC Australia carried the same five-ship count from that statement. This Extra used those desks to check the number. It does not lift their sentences.

Tehran’s answer landed on Jordan. The IRGC said it fired on Al Azraq, a base used by U.S. forces. Jordan’s armed forces said twenty ballistic missiles came from Iranian territory. Eighteen were intercepted and destroyed, the Jordanian statement said. Two fell in unpopulated areas. Jordan reported no casualties. That intercept count is Jordan’s. This Extra does not improve it.

The IRGC also claimed hangars for U.S. jets were destroyed at Al Azraq, and that two U.S. vessels and eight oil tankers were hit near Hormuz. Those are Iranian claims. They sit on the claim shelf. They are not confirmed damage reports from Amman or from Washington, and they do not become facts by repetition.
