On Wednesday, 9 September 2026, Texas operator Sky Elements flew exactly 2,977 illuminated drones into the outline of the Twin Towers at full architectural scale — one light for each life lost on 11 September 2001 at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in the United Airlines Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania. The installation is titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor.” It is a free public commemorative art piece, not a Ground Zero ceremony file. Who built it — attributed credits. Fast Company (Hunter Schwarz) and DroneXL (Haye Kesteloo, 9 September 2026) frame the piece as a sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts. Creative director Addison Mehr produced it with Sky Elements; named collaborators in those wraps include Studio Drift, Ideko (permitting/safety), designer Yan Paul Dubbelman, and artistic advisers Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz. Family and first-responder input shaped the design — DroneXL and Fast Company name FDNY responder Tim Brown and Terry Strada of 9/11 Families United among the community voices. Why the number is the story. Sky Elements has flown larger fleets — DroneXL notes nearly 5,000 drones and multiple Guinness marks — but this show locked the count at 2,977 because the death toll is the meaning. Fast Company quotes Sky Elements vice president Kyle Pivnick on the planning grind: thousands of hours to find launch space; about 12,000 square feet of flat open-sky ground; eventual staging at a U.S. Coast Guard recruitment-office parking lot on the southern tip of Manhattan. The flight sat over waterfront, not the original World Trade Center footprints, because airspace and ground security required clearances away from the anniversary morning plaza. Dialogue with Tribute in Light. DroneXL reports the drone towers stood beside the Tribute in Light xenon beams and were designed in dialogue with that annual marker. The score in named wraps included John Adams’s “On the Transmigration of Souls,” written for the victims, with additional music cited in secondary art wraps (Philip Glass, Max Richter). Tim Brown’s line — attributed.
