TRUMP BANS CANADIAN BOOZE, DAIRY & MOTORCYCLES. 29 SEP.

Washington is banning the import of certain Canadian alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles. The date is 29 September 2026, 12:01 a.m. eastern time. That is a White House proclamation, not a rumour. This Extra is that ban. It is not the Extra about Ottawa’s counter-tariffs. That file already sits at /money/canada-slams-tariff-door. Do not mix them.

Reuters, 8 September: the United States banned a broad swath of Canadian alcoholic beverages, motorcycles and dairy products from import, with the bans going into effect on 29 September and published on the White House website. They landed after Canada’s own retaliatory tariffs on about US$20 billion of American goods took effect after midnight Tuesday. Those Canadian duties are the other Extra. This Extra files the U.S. exclusion.

BBC, 9 September: President Donald Trump said in a series of executive orders on Tuesday that Canada was “discriminating” against the United States and outlined bans that begin on 29 September. Officials on both sides have said they would like a trade deal. No new talks were scheduled on that wrap since negotiations collapsed in late August.

CONFIRMED from the White House alcohol proclamation: certain alcoholic beverages that are products of Canada, as set forth in the annex, are excluded from importation into the United States, effective for goods imported on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern time on 29 September 2026. Products already imported but not yet entered for consumption before that date remain on the 50 percent duty from the earlier proclamation. That is the operative sentence. This Extra does not reprint the whole annex.

Reuters listed what the bans appeared to cover on the alcohol side: most alcohol products, including beer and various types of wine, whisky, bourbon, rum, vodka, vermouth, tequila, mezcal and brandy. BBC’s list: a long list of wine, rum and vodka products; beer made from malt; some dairy products like whey; cane molasses; non-alcoholic beer; motorbikes, including mopeds. Forbes, checking the same White House notices, added certain Canadian-made motorcycles, mopeds and cycles. This Extra does not invent a brand of rye or a VIN.

Dairy, as Reuters put the White House notices: whey protein, invert molasses, cane molasses and non-alcoholic beer. Cheese is not in the ban pile. Reuters: various cheese products were added to a list subject to a 50 percent tariff, but not banned outright. BBC: tariffs further hiked for cheeses and cheese substitutes, which were not covered by bans. CONFIRMED: whey and listed molasses out; cheese stays importable at 50 percent. Do not write that all dairy is banned.

Motorcycles are in the ban. Reuters said motorcycle imports. BBC said motorbikes, including mopeds. That is the vehicle line this Extra will carry. It does not add cars. It does not add trucks. The White House framed the alcohol ban as a response to continued discrimination against U.S. commerce with respect to alcoholic beverages. That is the proclamation’s title, not this desk’s colour.

What this Extra will not do: retell Ottawa’s 15, 25 and 50 percent counter-duties as if they were new. Those rates, the US$20 billion, the 00:01 Tuesday snap — that is /money/canada-slams-tariff-door. Mentioned here only so a reader does not confuse a Canadian tariff with a U.S. import ban. One is a duty. One is a closed door from 29 September.

Mark Carney, Reuters, Tuesday, on YouTube: “We have everything we need to pivot and prosper.” And: “That pivot will come at a cost. There’s always a cost to action. But it doesn’t come close to the cost of standing still.” Those are his words, attributed. They are not a White House line.
