Russian drones hit the Starokozache crossing between Ukraine and Moldova. Two people are dead. That is the Wednesday morning file from the Odesa region. This Extra does not name them. It does not invent a third body.
Governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram that two civilians near the Starokozache crossing were killed and three others injured. Reuters carried that count. AFP, on the same incident, carried the same two dead and three injured. Those numbers are Kiper’s. This Extra prints them as Kiper’s. It does not improve them.
Two civilians. Three injured. Crossing closed. Names are not on this Extra.
The crossing is on the Ukraine–Moldova line in the southern Odesa region. Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, the DPSU, said strike drones hit the checkpoint’s infrastructure and the ground around it and that fires followed. Reuters said the attack caused a major fire. Al Jazeera, filing from AFP and Reuters, said passenger and vehicle traffic was temporarily halted after the fire. Closed is the operational fact. A timetable for reopening is not on this Extra.
CONFIRMED, attributed: Russian drones, Starokozache, two civilians dead, three injured, fire, traffic stopped. Sources for those locks: Reuters; Odesa governor Kiper; AFP as Al Jazeera carried it; DPSU as the handout source. This Extra does not take a body count from a photograph. The still on this page is a DPSU handout of damaged ground, not of the dead.
What is not on the wire used here: names of the two who died. Nationalities beyond “civilians” as Kiper put it. A drone type. A launch site. A Russian confirmation of this specific checkpoint. This Extra will not fill those blanks. Sensitive deaths stay unnamed.
Reuters also logged a same-night attack on Kyiv: fires, emergency services said, and no casualties in the capital on that wrap. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a drone strike on a 16-storey building. That is a separate address. It is not Starokozache. This file does not fold Kyiv’s fires into the two dead at the border.
The still is a handout. Credit, exact: Handout / State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (DPSU) via Reuters — via Al Jazeera. It shows a burned vehicle at the checkpoint, not a face, not a body. The Extra will not caption it as the moment of death. It is aftermath, released by the border service, moved on the Reuters wire, seen on Al Jazeera.
A border crossing is not a symbolic target in a sentence. It is a road, a booth, a queue, a way out. Closing it, even temporarily, cuts a line between Ukraine and Moldova on a morning already carrying fire. How long the halt lasts is an operations question. DPSU told the Moldovan side, on files that named the closure. This Extra does not invent Chisinau’s reply.
CLAIM vs CONFIRMED, kept short. CONFIRMED: the hit at Starokozache; Kiper’s two dead and three injured; fire; halted traffic. NOT on this Extra: any name of the dead; any extra casualty; any claim that the photograph is a Reuters staff picture rather than a DPSU handout. Handout is the word. Via Reuters. Via Al Jazeera.
The war Extra from this desk already has Kyiv burning on an earlier night and tankers in the Gulf. This morning’s add is a crossing. Two civilians. Three hurt. A closed booth.
