DISASTER DESK — On 26 August 2026 a high-altitude ice-and-rock collapse on the China–Nepal Himalayan border unleashed a flash flood and debris flow down the Bhote Koshi / Trishuli corridor and into Gyirong Port. Named wires and Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) describe towns and project sites erased in minutes. This Extra updates the moving toll with dated attributions. It is not the older mud-rescue LIVE Extra. It is not Yamal, Kryvyi Rih, or Novorossiysk. How it started — attributed mechanism. Meghalayan Express carrying PTI (10 September 2026): flash floods triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal–Tibet border on 26 August; the Bhotekoshi carried the surge south, sweeping homes, vehicles, roads, bridges and hydropower works. EFE (9 September): initial analyses point to collapse of a high-altitude glacier in Nepalese territory; Chinese experts place the fracture roughly 5,200–5,400 metres and describe a chain reaction — ice, rock, debris — that reached Gyirong in about seven minutes; Chinese specialists rule out a glacial-lake outburst. Reuters’ 26 August first-day wrap had already framed a wall of mud and rock into the river and major casualties feared at Gyirong. Extra prints those attributed mechanisms. It does not invent a final forensic verdict.
NDRRMA/PTI on 10 Sep: about 1,377 dead in Nepal and about 5,130 missing. AA on 9 Sep: combined Nepal–China about 1,412 dead and more than 5,651 missing. Two dated ledgers — Extra does not fake one lock.
Nepal toll — NDRRMA / PTI, dated 10 September. The Meghalayan Express / PTI, Kathmandu, 10 September 2026: death toll in Nepal rose to 1,377 as more bodies were recovered; search continues for more than 5,000 missing — estimated 5,130; 13,656 people rescued. District recoveries attributed to NDRRMA in that wrap: Chitwan 364; Nawalparasi East 228; Nawalparasi West 222; Nuwakot 198; Rasuwa 178; Gorkha 77; Dhading 70; Tanahu 38; two victims died during treatment in Kathmandu. That is the Nepal-side ledger Extra locks for 10 September — moving, not sealed.
Combined / China shelf — Anadolu Agency, dated 9 September. AA (Aamir Latif, 9 September 2026 update): Nepali authorities had recovered 1,369 bodies as of Wednesday; combined death toll with China 1,412; more than 5,651 still missing; of those missing, 848 foreigners across Nepal and China tallies. AA separately: NDRRMA listed 5,132 missing including 587 foreigners; more than 13,646 rescued; over 21,100 security personnel mobilised. Chinese side in that AA wrap: 43 dead in Xizang/Tibet; 519 missing including 261 foreigners. EFE 9 September matched the 43 / 519 Tibet frame and a Nepal snapshot of 1,367 recovered / 5,133 missing — a day-older Nepal print than PTI’s 10 September 1,377 / 5,130. Extra claim-splits these boards. It does not invent a single locked worldwide total.
Why the numbers disagree on one page. Recovery continues. Agency wraps stamp different hours. Nepal’s NDRRMA line and China’s regional line are separate ledgers until both sides publish a joint certified count — which they have not. Desk rule for mass-casualty: attribute, date-stamp, refuse a false lock. No invented names of the dead. No rounding that invents certainty.

Downstream and winter clock. The National (10 September) and EFE note the surge travelled deep into Nepali valleys; Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading remain priority districts; UN partners have framed a flash appeal for tens of thousands affected as winter approaches. Extra does not invent appeal dollar figures beyond named wraps editors can re-check. Search and identification remain open: EFE noted only a small share of recovered remains returned to families by 9 September and large DNA collections underway — attributed recovery friction, not a closed case.
